Sustainability

Sustainable practices, every step of the way

Sustainability is a priority for us right across the business. We take our role as kaitiaki seriously, from the suppliers we work with to the machinery we use and the way we transport your product.

Preston Foods production facility

We look for the same care from our suppliers and customers that we put in ourselves, right through from the farm to our production floor, our transport and the people who eat the food.

Refrigeration with zero ozone depletion potential

Our Preston Foods production facility has 1,000m² of floor space fitted out with modern machinery, built to keep up with the demands of the business while reducing our environmental impact.

We’ve invested in CO2 refrigeration at our production facility. The system uses CO2 as its refrigerant, with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1 and an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0, and it runs in a closed cycle.

A regular maintenance schedule helps the system run efficiently and reduces the risk of leaks and unplanned emissions.

70% of our transport is with an eco-friendly partner

Our sister company KAM Transport is our main transport provider, and the only transport company of its kind in New Zealand currently holding Toitū enviromark gold certification. Their eco-friendly fleet runs modern technology that reports on driver behaviour and CO2 emissions.

KAM has also introduced a policy of carrying fuller loads and making fewer trips, as an active effort to reduce carbon emissions.

The result – a 16% reduction in CO2 emissions

KAM gives us ongoing utilisation reports and uses Scania Driver Performance Monitoring, so we can see what their work to cut carbon emissions is delivering.

Water – a precious resource

New machinery is how we cut the water we use.

Our older packaging machines pumped water out as waste. Our new thermoformer recirculates the water that cools the machine, and has used just 20 litres of water in total since it was installed in December 2024.

Finalists

Awards finalist

We were named a finalist in the 2025 Gold Awards Green Gold Sustainability category, in recognition of the sustainable practices we follow in our daily operations.
Green fleet

Green fleet

We replaced two vehicles in our small fleet with hybrids, and all new vehicles from here on will be hybrid or electric.
Recycling

Recycling

We recycle around 28,201kg of cardboard and 94kg of plastic film a year. We also use less packaging by re-using cardboard cartons and reducing strapping where practical.
Energy efficient

Energy efficient

We’ve increased production efficiency, so our facility runs on fewer days and uses less electricity, with less food and water waste as well.
Food Waste

Food waste

We maximise yield and use the whole product, repurposing what would otherwise be waste to keep it out of landfill and reduce emissions.
Lighting

Lighting

We replaced the lightbulbs in our office and factory areas with EcoPoint Tri Proof light fittings, and put up signs reminding everyone to switch them off when they’re not needed.
